A discussion of what to be aware of, when choosing a trend following strategy on forex market, or if you try to locate tops and bottoms. Technical analysis should be applied in conjunction with fundamentals no matter what. Do not try to pick tops and bottoms if you are not ready to let your profits run.

A favorite Forex trading saying is “the trend is your friend”. In other words, if you trade with the trend then you have more chances of selecting winning trades. The intent is logic in that you “go with the crowd”.However, a very favourite forex trading strategy involves “picking bottoms and tops”. This trading method normally involves using a forex technical indicator to determine trend reversals. More specifically, traders are searching for positive signs that either a bull buying channel is about to top or that a bear selling channel is about to bottom. The intent of pursuing such a strategy seems obvious in that the sooner you can pinpoint such an event, the more profit you can make following the reversal. However, top and bottom picking does seem like a hazardous practice on the surface because you are about to pit your skills against the entire forex market which is moving in the opposite direction; this is often referred to a “trying to catch a falling knife” in the sense that you are likely to cut yourself. 

Most traders think about that a forex market trend is a predictable price response defined by bull buying or bear selling channels which can exist for some time. A new forex market trend is quite often born when the forex market price breaks through either a support or resistance level and reaches new lows or new highs respectively. 

When you attempt to detect the top or bottom of a trend you are embarking on a complex and quite hazardous exercise, since you are about to trade in the opposite direction of the market. However, many traders still attempt to master this technique because the rewards can be so great. In other words, many traders are prepared to accept the high risks associated with ‘picking tops and bottoms’ because of the tremendous rewards that are potentially available. The mental attraction is that if they can detect a top, for instance, then they can ride the selling channel down and so achieve a considerable profit. 

However, if you are going to accept such trades with a high level of risks then you must perform this strategy correctly. Obviously I am not speaking about “risk” in the sense of money management, but more so, that the trend is more likely to continue than to reverse. This implies that you should apply appropriate money management. So when you attempt to locate a top or bottom, you will engage a massive risk bourgeois as you are about to trade against the entire market. Hence you must be skilled in detecting a doable reversal, and manage your risk: reward accordingly. 

As a result, fear often arises which can produce significant negative psychological effects that cause you to snatch at swift profits e.g. 50 to 100 pips after entering a trade once a doable top or bottom has been formed. The reason for this action is that knowing that you are swimming against the tide makes you fear that the market will suddenly reverse back towards its original direction. However, this is a bad trading practice, especially over the long haul, because you would be subjecting yourself to intense risk without letting your profits run when there is a good chance to ride the trade for a long time.

So, in order to be successful with this technique, you must commit yourself totally to its inherent concepts. As such, you must be prepared to steel yourself and let your profits run (risk free, if possible) until the channel shows signs of exhaustion. By doing this, your trading strategy will enjoy a good risk: reward ratio over the long haul which it would not do if you continuously snatched at small profits. 

You will soon realize that you can only develop profitable forex trading strategies through your own hard work which will undoubtedly include the study of other people’s forex experiences. 

 In a broad sense, the forex market tracks the stock market, which in turn, responds to global economic movements. When the Dow Jones Index rises, the EURO and GBP tend to rise whilst the USD and the YEN tend to fall. Conversely, when the Dow Jones Index falls, the USD and YEN rise whilst the EURO and GBP fall. As you undoubtedly know, the stock market tends to start in response to “bad news” whilst it tends to rise on “good news”. Forex trading analysis is used in order to design forex trading systems and consists basically of two elements which are forex fundamental trading analysis and technical analysis. Ideally, both should be used in combination to grasp a superior understanding of the forex market, and doable trades. Monitor the trade for doable reversals and exit points using both forex technical and fundamental analysis. 

In summary, forex technical analysis involves examining currency prices over a period of time to try and refer forex trends and their potential reversals by detecting tops and bottoms. For example, if the value of a particular currency has been steadily increasing over a period of several weeks, then it is likely that the trend will continue in the future, at least for the short term. If you can correctly refer a trend, and trade in the same direction you are likely to make profitable trades. Also, the early you can refer a trend‘s reversal, the more chance you have of making larger profits.

A method of evaluating securities by examining statistics generated by market activity, such as past prices and volume. Technical analysts do not attempt to measure a security’s intrinsic value, but instead use charts and other tools to refer patterns that can recommend future activity.
Technical analysts believe that the historical performance of stocks and markets are indications of future performance.

That is where technical analysis comes in. Technical analysis uses stock market trading or charting software to plot the historical stock price movement in relation with time. The most basic version of this is what comes up when we click on “charts” from a stock ticker’s main menu. Depending on what level of chart one uses, one can overlay this basic chart with a number of other significant and relevant information that can tell you whether the bulls or the bears are in charge (meaning the stock price is trending downward due to bear pressure or trending upward due to bull activity), the moving averages, the trading volume information, the periodic highs and lows, the resistance and support levels and many other relevant and important factors that enable a technical analyst to make a judgment on which direction and how swiftly the stock price is likely to move in the near term. Hence, this type of analysis is more used by short-term and options traders who typically want to get in and out of the market quickly. The drawback of this method, as one might expect, is that technical analysis does not look at the fundamentals of the company at all. It is not concerned with the company’s performance and financial numbers.

Needless to say, as you might have guessed it, neither method used alone is a good way to make trading or investment decisions. One can make a purchase decision looking at the charts only to realize that the company declares terrible results in the next earnings release. Similarly, one can look only at the fundamentals and make a buying decision only to see that the stock price has reached a long-term resistance level and rebounded downward.

Moral of the story: Do not only rely on stock market trading software to make your purchase and sell decisions. It always helps to look at the fundamentals too.

The one thing that marks a forex market is its dynamic nature. Here fortunes change in seconds and minutes. If taken positively, this feature also grants a trader to enter the market many times in a single day and garner some profit for himself.

So, in spot gold trading on forex, you are trading one troy ounce of gold against USD. Interestingly the symbol for this is also XAUUSD with XAU representing one ounce of gold. Now, suppose the price quote in the spot market is 1100 XAUUSD. What this means is that one troy ounce of gold in the spot market right now is equal to $1,100 USD.

Just like any other financial market, the price quote in the gold spot market has got a bid/ask spread. So if the price quote is 1110/1115, it means that you can sell one troy ounce of gold in the spot market for $1,110 and purchase one troy ounce of gold at $1,115 meaning you will have to pay a spread of $5 per troy ounce when trading in gold in the spot market.Spot gold trading on forex is a fast moving market and the spread keeps on changing throughout the day.

Now a standard lot in currency trading is equal to $100,000. But in case of gold on forex, a standard lot is equal to 10 troy ounces of gold. So, if you find the price quote to be 1112/1117 and you are interested in going long. In that case you will have to purchase 1 lot of gold that is equal to $11,170. Spot gold market is a fast moving market and the price quotes keep on changing. So, suppose just after 60 minutes, you find the quote to be 1120/1126. You see a profit and decide to get out selling at $11,200 making a profit of $30. Now if you had used leverage, you would have needed a much lower initial investment to make a profit of $30 in just 60 minutes.

Gold is also know as anti dollar. What this means is that their is an inverse correlation between gold and USD. This inverse relationship can help you hedge your positions in other currency pairs. Forex Spot Market

Buy to hold (aka the Warren Buffett strategy) means that you’re taking a long term position on the stock and anticipating its dividends to wage you with income and value, and is the least risky of the two strategies. The next piece of fundamental analysis you should do on a stock is to find out what products the company makes, and go to the super market and watch what people purchase – companies that make things tend to be good long term investments, but horrible for rapid share price gains. Tech stocks, where the products prefabricated tend to have a short shelf life, are more volatile.

Other trends to look at are national weather patterns. If a hurricane is due to hit, the time to purchase shares of Home Depot is just before it hits, and sell it shortly afterwards.
